MUDHONEY

The Lucky Ones - SP765

4198

Worldwide lovers of the finer things are rejoicing at the news that Mudhoney, yep Mudhoney, is back in action in 2008 with The Lucky Ones, the band’s eighth full album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking. Deliberately and aggressively raw, The Lucky Ones sounds as lean and as full-on as any modern equivalent one cares to mention. Recorded in a scant 3.5 days (including overdubs) with Tucker Martine (who also recorded four songs on the previous album, Under a Billion Suns), Mudhoney went in armed with a batch of new material expecting to spend a fair amount of time getting it right. Bang—and bang again after some mixing—and a new album was birthed in record time, faster than anything else the band’s done to date. The grand majority of these numbers were intentionally written “from the rhythm up” instead of from the riff and the lyrics down. The effect is to thrust out the bottom-end rumble of drummer Dan Peters and bassist Guy Maddison, and to bring about a cohesive whole not entirely ruled by the almighty riff—although you certainly don’t have to look hard to find ‘em. Opening The Lucky Ones, the band defiantly looks twenty years of heaviness and critical hosannas in the eye and spits out the anthemic “I’m Now,” an existential place where “the past makes no sense, the future looks tense.” Finding eager new converts locked firmly in the present who’ll agree should not prove difficult.

THANK YOU GUYS!

you make me feel one of the lucky ones, just because i was born in your same era!
thank you for your wild & sincere rockin’, that’s the original soundtrack of my free time since 1995!
i’m really curious and a bit unpatient to listen to your latest work, and i hope to meet you again on the road, as it happened in Milan, italy, at the Rainbow Club in may 2006! and i hope to talk with you again!! it really was the best show i have ever seen, because you guys were WITH us… (because you were NEAR US: it was a small venue and you felt more REAL for us fans than ever…you know italy is the opposite part of the globe for you!)
...and with it i thank you again, and i hope to be one of… THE LUCKY ONES! :-)
sincerely,
Benaglia Luca, from Agrate Brianza, Italy!

i was a lucky one

@ Chicago’s 2007 Double Door concert, Dan Peter’s and Mark Arm could be heard saying something about “The new album, the new album.” b/f the 1st note was even played.

b/f we all knew it, Mudhoney launched into their written setlist, easily visible from my front row gawk ‘n’ rawk spot. they proceeded to tear through classic after classic for the (only) 200+ people who bothered to show up.

not much was said to the audience during the encore but one thing was particularly odd; Mark Arm stood mic-in-hand w/ no guitar in sight. after the familar bashing outs of “Hate The Police” & “The $ Will Roll Right In” even more of a frenzy cooked up as the band starting playing very unfamilar tunes.

oh, and these tunes were good. check-your-pants-for-seepage good.

fired off one after another, these stripped down terror roars effectively killed everyone w/ 1 part “Wow!” and 1 part “What?”. i remember thinking that these are the loudest, fastest, and most agressive Mudhoney songs I have ever heard (that’s including their unreleased “See If Speed Kills” sessions the band recorded in early 1991).

just kidding. no such sessions exist.

but i still stand by my claim made for the 2007 Chicago encore. to hear these songs full force was enough to make me sentimentally say to myself “i was a lucky one”. afterwards i bought myself an ice cream cone and fed some ducks w/ the crumbs.
