Watch TV Priest’s “It Was Beautiful” Official Video

Watch TV Priest’s new video for “It Was Beautiful,” a new single from My Other People, their forthcoming new album. The dizzying single-shot performance visual was directed, produced, and filmed by the band in East London.

Vocalist Charlie Drinkwater says this of the single, “‘It Was Beautiful’ is a love song about the past, present, and future. A reminder that love is the most essential thing. The words came fast; it was recorded in a single emotive session, the first song we wrote together after my family had gone through a difficult experience and I think you can hear that in the kind of melancholy euphoria that plays out as the song progresses. In some ways it’s a coda to the whole album; a reminder to guard your hope fiercely.”

What people have said about TV Priest:
“On these new tracks, vocalist Charlie Drinkwater continues to resemble Joe Talbot, but I can just as easily hear Nick Cave, Jim Morrison, and Protomartyr’s Joe Casey in those bellows. His bandmates sound spry and adventurous, brimming with ideas and kinetic energy.” [“Bury Me In My Shoes”] - Stereogum

“The music has a real wielding tone throughout buzzing guitars and yelled vocals offering itself up with plenty of on the side feels.” [“Bury Me In My Shoes”] - Closed Captioned

“Frontman Charlie Drinkwater makes a startling statement. “I’m going to take these clothes off now,” he sings, offering up an image that seems to reveal the very core of this stunning new offering.” [“One Easy Thing”] - Far Out

“Charlie Drinkwater’s vulnerable side comes to the fore in ‘One Easy Thing’, with a voice that lends itself as capably to emotive ballads as it does to hook-heavy punk” [“One Easy Thing”] - Riot Mag

“Thoughtful and metronomic in equal measure, the plucking guitar chords at the forefront of the sonics with a mesmeric rhythm which is almost hypnotic in its delivery.” - [“Limehouse Cut”] -Backseat Mafia

“Stark and sinister, this track is a Nick Cave-esque lament on urban displacement and a longing for beautiful landscapes.” - [“Limehouse Cut”] - The Times

“Beautifully sparse in it’s opening refrain, the track points to a change of direction for the band. Sonically, the new single seems lighter than their previous output, aligning more with the booming British Post-Punk scene than with their krautrock inspired roots.” [“One Easy Thing”] - When The Horn Blows

“The song is dark, a rock with a riff that is pleasant, Charlie Drinkwater’s vocals over the top are reminiscent of Johnny Cash. The song evokes the feeling of exhaustion without being exhausting to listen to.” [“One Easy Thing”] - ASBO Magazine

“Fuzzed-out post punk from London four-piece…harsh, brittle eruptions offering up a variety of teeth-rattling noises.” [Uppers] - Uncut

“The post-punk band have caught attention with a string of superb singles, exemplifying their scorching post-punk sound.” [Uppers] - CLASH

“Uppers…should rubber stamp TV Priest as one of, if not your favorite new act” [Uppers] - The Line of Best Fit

“Ragged yet tight, sprawling yet focussed, it’s a singular vision of a disparate time.” [Uppers] ★★★★ DORK

“Scratch the surface, peel away the layers and you’ll find something here to make you think there might be something more to come.” [Uppers, Best Albums of 2021] - Louder Than War

“Sultry, prophetic lyricism with brash instrumentation…” [“This Island”] - Brooklyn Vegan

Once Twice Melody features 18 tracks, and was presented in 4 chapters with lyric animations for each song. Watch the lyric animations for the entire album now at Beach House’s YouTube channel

Once Twice Melody is the first album produced entirely by Beach House, and was recorded at Pachyderm studio in Cannon Falls, MN, United Studios in Los Angeles, CA, and Apple Orchard Studios in Baltimore, MD. For the first time, a live string ensemble was used, with arrangements by David Campbell. Once Twice Melody was mostly mixed by Alan Moulder but a few tracks were also mixed by Caesar Edmunds, Trevor Spencer, and Dave Fridmann.

Recently, Once Twice Melody peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Albums Sales Chart, the band’s first-ever record to do so. It also debuted at #1 on the Top Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, Tastemaker Albums, and Top Current Album Sales charts (see Billboard’s March 1st news story). The album also spent six weeks at #1 on the NACC 200 College Charts.

All formats of Once Twice Melody are available from Sub PopBella Union (UK/Europe), and Mistletone (Australia / New Zealand), and select independent retailers in North America.

What people are saying about Once Twice Melody:
“It’s also so sublimely imagistic that it makes you wonder why film directors and music supervisors haven’t been hounding Legrand and Scally to create movie scores.” The New Yorker

“Their most cinematic, certainly most expansive release in the nearly 20 years they’ve been putting out music together” - NPR Music

“Beach House proves there’s more to the duo than fans may think, with brash, lively arrangements that shine as much as the restrained ones (B+).” AV Club

“Legrand and Scally have truly outdone themselves…” Consequence

“Their records are swelling Feels Generators, powered as much by mood and vibe as songcraft. But with their eighth album they’ve created a galaxy. Once Twice Melody is by far – and by design – Beach House’s most sprawling record to date, but it’s also their most cohesive, fully realized record since Bloom.” - Brooklyn Vegan

Once Twice Melody sometimes seems more like a painting than an album, one in which bits of color have been added to every corner over a long stretch of time..” Wall Street Journal

“It’s in the duo’s ability to create music that possesses the same intimacy regardless of its scope. And that’s a magic trick that never loses its allure (8/10).” UNCUT

“Their brand of meticulously crafted songwriting, candy-flossed melodies and textured, widescreen ambiance remain as compelling and mesmerizing as ever.” SPIN

“Another towering landmark in their career (9/10).” The Line of Best Fit

“This is a work of cinematic beauty.” ★★★★ The Telegraph

“The duo have not so much transformed as honed their vision, leading to this superb double album.” ★★★★ The Times of London

“With its incredible ability to balance horror and romance, machinery and humanity, this is a diverse, innovative and well-considered collection of songs that, while asking a lot of listeners, rewards absolutely.” ★★★★ Irish Times

“As bewitching as ever” ★★★★ Record Collector

“Rightfully proclaimed genre-defining purveyors of dream-pop, Victoria and Alex effortlessly match their own mountainous standards, delivering yet another all-engulfing, pensive package of sonic escapism. Let yourself be a canvas, and Beach House will paint you a beautiful picture.” ★★★★ DORK

“Beach House’s hymn to the grandeur of relationships is, perhaps, the most musically diverse and thematically mature project the duo has released to date—an emphatic affirmation of life’s joys and sorrows.” ★★★★ SLANT

“Literally gives you shivers.” - Rockerilla

“In eighteen timeless and vaporous tracks, the dream pop duo does wonders. An eighth album to be placed high in their already rich discography.” Les Inrocks

“As much as any Beach House album is about finding new places to explore—or perhaps more accurately escape—within their hypnotic lullabies, Once Twice Melody is Beach House at their most uninhibited and playful, seemingly trying different things for the fun of it and by and large succeeding.” Treble

“Weaving in dustier threads to Beach House’s ever shimmery fabric proves that the cyborgian approach of mixing the organic with the mechanical is an increasingly winning formula (8/10).”  No Ripcord

Once Twice Melody is a grand statement from Beach House that sits together as an extended album, while also offering more bite-sized memorable moments to take away, no doubt leaving plenty to discover on each return (8/10).” Gigwise

Kiwi Jr’s Chopper: The Band’s Third Album, Will Be Available Friday, August 12th Worldwide From Sub Pop

Smash cut to Kiwi Jr.’s third album, Chopper, overseen by trusted pilot Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs) on storied Sub Pop Records. Turning nocturnal with necks mock turtle, our Local Kiwi Jr. takes neon flight off the digital cliff - like The Monkees starring in Blade Runner; like Michael Mann directs Encino Man. Ten songs with synth shimmer, zen gongs with yard strimmer. The signs along the highway read “LESS BAR, MORE NOIR AHEAD.” Ah, those late summer, Joe Strummer, Home on the Range Rover Blues.

There’s a melancholy to all forms of flight, and the view out the Chopper is as hazy as it gets: mission-oriented, both stealth and self-realized. This album is decidedly (yet almost secretly) anti-patio-sunscreen-Beach Boys bachelor cruise sing-a-long. Sure, these songs let a little light through the blinds, but they sting insomnia, corrupt mayors, Kennedy Curses, sex tapes, and deer rifles. Chopper is the bird’s eye view of the big event - a real nighttime character of oil stain, film grain, search light, night flight. It is muscular and fragile; loud yet quiet: both an observer and somehow the observed spectacle itself.

What was slack in the slacker phase, got tauter, with lacquer glaze. Slick gloss, rightened wrongs; murdered boss, promoted pawns. With Boeckner transmitting high-voltage shocks upon every reach for a familiar instrument, Kiwi Jr. expands the palette with string machine song, synthesizered oblong, and Dentyne Classic Menthol vocals from area soprano Dorothea Paas (US Girls, Badge Epoch Ensemble) like the missing piece all along.

Kiwi Jr. brings the Chopper to a new space, demilitarizing the technology just like flasks, aviators, and cargo shorts. Graceful in the air above, but when the Chopper lands, there’s chaos on the ground.  Kiwi Jr. shout, “Look Out!” When it gets close, it’ll blow the hat right off of your head.

Hold onto your hats, Babies.

KIWI JR. is Jeremy Gaudet vocals and guitar, Brian Murphy guitar, Mike Walker bass, Brohan Moore drums, and everybody played a little bit of keyboard.

—-------

On August 12th, 2022, KIWI JR. will release Chopper, the group’s third album, worldwide on CD/LP/CS/DSPs through Sub Popwith the exception of Canada through the band’s Kiwi Club imprint.  The album, which features the lead single “Night Vision” along with highlights “Unspeakable Things,” “The Sound of Music” and “The Extra Sees the Film,” was recorded and produced in Toronto by Sub Pop labelmate Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Operators).

The “Night Vision” video was helmed by returning director Laura-Lynn Petrick (Kiwi Jr.’s “Waiting In Line,” also directed videos by Weyes Blood and Jessica Pratt).

Singer/guitarist Jeremy Gaudet offers this, “Before ‘Night Vision’ was 100% written, just the basic idea of it existing as a Kiwi Jr. song inspired us and set the tone for the record. A lot of the images in the lyrics are of teenagers driving around, trying to make plans, sharing the aux, putting their parents’ car in the ditch, etc.  But the idea at the center of the song is that of working up the nerve to make a big decision. Like a boxer getting pumped up before a fight.”

Chopper is available for preorder from Sub Pop. LP preorders from megamart.subpop.com, select independent retailers in North America will receive the limited Loser edition on crystal clear vinyl (while supplies last). Meanwhile, preorders through select independent retailers in the UK and EU will receive the limited Loser edition on clear vinyl (while supplies last).

Kiwi Jr.’s tour schedule for 2022 in support of Chopper currently spans Saturday, May 28th in Hamilton, Ontario at Mills Hardware and runs through Sunday, September 25th in Amsterdam, Netherlands at Paradiso. Sub Pop labelmates Weird Nightmare will also co-headline Kiwi Jr.’s North American shows (May 28th-July 31st, select dates). Additional live dates to be announced soon.

What people said about Kiwi Jr.’s 2021 release, Cooler Returns:
“Sustaining momentum near-flawlessly across 13 songs…  Kiwi Jr. have the skills to match their smarts.”  ★★★★ 4 stars - MOJO

“Sardonic storytelling and mocking asides…an impatient, slacker-rock imagining of a folk album....some chords ring out with George Harrison glossiness while others are as shaggy and impetuous as The Clean —rarely do hi-fi and lo-fi splendors coexist so harmoniously.” -  Pitchfork

Cooler Returns is all hits, a baker’s dozen of ridiculously catchy three-minute pop nuggets that deliver massive sing-along-choruses.” - Brooklyn Vegan

“Canadian absurdists’ return is a lyrical delight” - Uncut

“This one may have been released in literally the very first week of 2021, but it never strayed far from rotation. A truly jubilant sound echoing The Clean and Orange Juice but with the punch of contemporary indie, and wry and winking vocals that remind what the ‘90s had to offer underground.” [2021 Year In Review] - Aquarium Drunkard

“Kiwi Jr. take the jangliest of guitars and dribble enigmatic observations all over them.  Light-hearted and exhilarating enough to make you stop caring and too catchy for its own good.” [15 Best Indie Pop Records of 2021] - PopMatters

“Kiwi Jr. hypnotize with their sophomore record. There is incredible efficiency in the brief slices of the Toronto foursome’s peppy pop songcraft–more than half clock in under three minutes–with enticing hooks and odd references.”[40 Best Albums of 2021] - Rock & Roll Globe

“Kiwi Jr’s world is the perfect anecdote to the real world in 2020/21.” [2021 Albums of The Year]-  Louder Than War
