Plexi
MEMBERS:
Michael Angelos – vocals, bass
Michael Barragan – guitar
Norm Block – drums
WHERE FROM:
Los Angeles, California
WHERE NOW:
The band is currently signed with Atlantic Records. Michael Angelos made a cameo appearance in the 1999 indie-film When.
HOW FORMED:
Angelos was an original member of ’70s kiddie-rockers “Carriage”. After attending USC film school only to find himself whoring his talents for a limited home viewing audience, he returned to his first love — music. Angelos found Barragan go-go dancing at a West Hollywood bar and asked him if he played guitar. The two began writing together and sought inspiration at a Taoist retreat where they found drummer Norm Block. Block had recently left the Southern California cult he had been with since his childhood, and was at the retreat seeking much-needed solace and spiritual guidance. The three young men soon moved in together and formed a band.
DATE FORMED:
1993
HIGHLIGHT:
Cheer Up, their 1997 album, was picked up by Atlantic. Atlantic provided the oppurtunity to tour with bigger bands, including Smashmouth and Sugar Ray. This fit the bill for Angelos, who has professed an overwhelming desire to be a rock star.
“Plexi are the new feather in Sub Pop’s cap…a psychotropic nightmare, a scary but cool crossbreed of the New York Dolls, Gang of Four’s anxiety, Bowie’s glam/camp obsession, and Metallica’s addiction to the long-haul hesitation mid-song.” – Melody Make
