“A potential classic that surprises at every turn…” [9/10] - CLASH

“…A visceral treatise on modern-day existential dread.” [8.6/10] - PASTE

HEY WHAT’s refinements make it clear that they are still finding fresh angles on the same themes that have animated them since the beginning: using minimalism to express the entwined pairing of intimacy and loneliness, searching for meaning in the rubble after a departure too catastrophic to address by name.” [8.4/10, “Best New Music”] - Pitchfork

“The people behind HEY WHAT are redefining how a rock band can sound.” [“Album of the Week”] ★★★★ The Guardian

“The information exchange attains a near-perfect equilibrium between sanctified melody and distress signals… After almost 30 years documenting the bittersweet mysteries of life, this one’s for the angels.” ★★★★ - MOJO

CHAI Release New Video For “miniskirt”

This past spring, CHAI released their new album WINK via Sub Pop. On WINK, the “scrappiness of Chai’s early records is peeled back to reveal a dreamier collection of melodies driven by Yuna’s sprightly and varied drumming” (New York Times), and their recently-released Adult Swim single “miniskirt” falls into this sound. Today, they share an accompanying video directed by Yoshika Matsuoka. CHAI consistently have an incredible, colorful aesthetic - and this new video is a hi-def presentation of their curated sets.

CHAI’s YUUKI elaborates: “We brainstormed everything, from the ideas to the plot, and with the director, we brought it all to life! This song’s keywords, ‘miniskirt’ and ‘showing off your skin,’ brought the vision for a battle between the miniskirt and long-skirt cliques. Our ‘fight for justice’ in the means of ‘kawaii’ may differ from ‘justice’ for others…and the thought of ‘kawaii,’ that never came to our minds, may actually be the door to opening something new…It’s a story of realization through battle! In the end, what we see is ‘NEO!’ Within this one life we get to live, let’s reinvent ourselves over and over again!”

PRAISE FOR WINK

“Chai is a professional purveyor of whimsy.” - New York Times

“One of CHAI’s greatest strengths is the Japanese band’s ability to weave between different genres, buoyed by their generous sense of humor and vibrantly catchy hooks” - Pitchfork

“challenging your expectations is a key tenet of this band.” - NPR Music

“Inspired by the varied genres they were listening to at home, WINK injects the effervescent energy of their past dance-punk work into funk, chiptune, and more.”

 - Pitchfork

“This is the year CHAI breaks through like never before.” - Complex

“WINK looks to possess a glitzy, glossy appeal all its own, incorporating EDM and R&B in gleefully idiosyncratic ways.” - AV Club

Shannon Lay Shares New Official Video for “A Thread to Find”

On the heels of her previously released singles, “Rare to Wake”, “Awaken and Allow “ and “Geist,” Shannon Lay shares the official new video for “A Thread to Find.” Lay wrote this song after walking into an old hotel in Switzerland and being struck by the feeling like she’d been there before, which is a testament to the energy we leave behind and stumble across. She shares about the song:

”A Thread to Find” is about finding pieces of yourself in unfamiliar places.  It is about watching the people around you grow and evolve and admiring the chaos and the beauty of discovering new worlds within ourselves.  It is recognizing the courage and strength in each other even in the face of great challenge.  And it is a reminder for when you get lonely on your journey that we are in this together.  You’re on your own but not alone.”

These singles are off her forthcoming long-player Geist, which will be available worldwide on October 8th from Sub Pop.

In addition to the previously announced shows, Lay has confirmed new UK & EU dates. See below for a full list of dates.

Fri. Nov. 12 - Paris, FR - Le Consulat
Sat. Nov. 13 - Kortrijk, BE - Sonic City Festival
Mon. Nov. 15 - London, UK -St. Pancras Old Church

What people are saying about Shannon Lay:
“It’s impossible to overstate just how beautiful the song is, Lay’s voice woven into transcendent harmonies as her patient but insistent acoustic guitar loops itself into a kind of instrumental mantra. Glistening keys and handclaps play around the edges, shading in new colors without ever disturbing the serenity of repetition. If this is what change sounds like, it’s easy to look forward to whatever’s next on the horizon for Lay.” [“Rare To Wake”] - Stereogum

“Shannon Lay delivers each moment in “Rare to Wake” with deep care and intention. Throughout the song’s five-minute runtime, the Los Angeles songwriter’s voice never appears unaccompanied: It is always layered in harmonies, followed by wordless echoes, or conversing with a sparse ensemble of upright bass, keys, electric guitar, and handclaps. Her lyrics are formed by existential concerns (“Have I always been who I am?”) and quiet affirmations (“I am longing to grow”). While her words slowly outline an imagistic narrative, the real story is in the sound itself—percussion teases a climax that never arrives, the background vocals sometimes overtake the lead, and her central acoustic guitar riff loops with the steady, meditative quality of ambient synths. Like a living painting, each new texture and color shifts the mood.” - [“Rare to Wake”, “Best New Track”] Pitchfork

Geist already feels like a special record, emerging from a global struggle with something rich and optimistic, a reminder of the power of creativity and our ability to adapt.” [“Awaken and Allow”/”Geist”] - For The Rabbits

Cartel Madras’s The Serpent & The Tiger is out today, Watch “LAVENDER NIGHTZ” official video

Cartel Madras’s The Serpent & The Tiger, the group’s new, 10-track project, is out now worldwide on all DSPs from Sub Pop, and in Canada from Royal Mountain Records. Today, the duo is also sharing the official video for “LAVENDER NIGHTZ,” directed by Asim Overstands and Vince Raquel.

Cartel Madras says of the video, “In ‘LAVENDER NIGHTZ’ we take you to one night in Tokyo in a playful nod to the many iterations of a Neo Tokyo and the visual stylings of Wong Kar Wai. We have always been creatures of the night and this song takes you through a contemplative, moody freestyle from a moment in our lives.”

The Serpent & The Tiger is the third installment of the Project Goonda trilogy (which includes 2018’s Trapistan and 2019’s Age of the Goonda) and features the highlights “WORKING,” “FEAR & LOATHING,” “DRIFT,” “Dream Girl Concept,” and the aforementioned “LAVENDER NIGHTZ.”

The project also includes guest appearances from Backxwash (on the track “DEEPINTHEJUNGLE”), Dom Dias, Airospace, Tyris White, Jide, and Shiro Jackson, with production by Dias (tracks 1-4), Naphi (track 5), White (tracks 6-8), and Jide (tracks 9-10).

What people are saying about Cartel Madras:
“Ultimately, Cartel Madras bring more than enough energy, character and attitude to make The Serpent & the Tiger a must-listen (8/10).” [The Serpent & The Tiger] - Exclaim

“Speedy dulcet pop-rap dominates…On “LAVENDER NIGHTZ “and “DRIFT,” the MCs speed it up, syllables popping like percussion. “DEEPINTHEJUNGLE” (featuring Backxwash) and “CONTRABAND” provide contrast, both anti-love songs, the first located where the wild things are, the second slick R&B.” The Serpent & The Tiger] - The Wire

“With 10 songs and a total time of 26 minutes, it’s a potent if brief example of their energetic hip hop, combining a variety of trap and house beats with their rapid-fire flow and lyrics revolving around self-expression and autonomy.” [The Serpent & The Tiger] - KEXP

“A mix of lush and glossy house beats, smooth and seductive like a snake, and take-no-prisoners rap bars that roar like a tiger.” [The Serpent & The Tiger] - NEXT Magazine

The Serpent & The Tiger certainly hits hard, but it’s blows are delivered with purpose.” [The Serpent & The Tiger] - Northern Transmissions

“They’ve got an absolutely wicked flow — think M.I.A. meets Cardi B. Hints of traditional Tamil music are sprinkled throughout.” [“Goonda Gold”] - Stereogum

Cartel Madras are smashing barrier musically and are sure to blow your mind with their uniqueness.” [Age of the Goonda] - CLASH

“Full of raw, powerful, nonchalant energy”  [“Goonda Gold”] - Gal-Dem

“Comprising six tracks, the EP possesses layered bass lines pumped with adrenaline, a range of Indian classical instruments weaved in and hooks that stay in your brain for days.” [Age of the Goonda] - NME

Age of the Goonda provides an electrifying burst of the duo’s live show energy in concentrated form.” - Loud & Quiet
