Following the release of “Stretch the Struggle” and “Hammer,” Bria Salmena shares the electrifying new single and video “Rags”, directed by Julia Hendrickson and Justin Aranha.
“Rags” is a song about transgressive rage and the catharsis that is possible when it’s given permission to move freely through the body. Inspired by the X-ray photography series of co-director Justin Aranha, the “Rags” video is a visual exploration of what it feels like to strip away things that no longer serve you, a theme that we see throughout the album. The video centers the “body” of the community as the vehicle through which rage can be shared, held, and transformed. Surrounded by Bria’s friends and community, a heightened collective vulnerability and connection to rage is redefined by togetherness.
From Salmena, “In writing Rags and developing the video concept in collaboration with director Julia Hendrickson, “accommodation” revealed itself as the foundation of the rage we were both drawing inspiration from. Altering your values to accommodate external expectations was a feeling I knew all too well from my adolescence. When I realized I was losing myself, as an adult, to the same vices of external validation, I felt like an angry teenage girl all over again. As a way of reconciling this self-awareness, I sat in my bedroom and tried to write a song my fifteen-year-old self would want to hear.”
Director Julia Hendrickson shares, “When I first heard “Rags,” I was moved by its raw anger, intensity, and sexuality—a fierce, youthful, and self-assured energy. I knew I wanted the video to capture those same qualities. There’s so much to be angry about right now, and Bria’s rage carves out a space where you can scream alongside her.”

Earlier this month, Bully delivered two excellent covers of Nirvana’s “About a Girl” and Orville Peck’s “Turn To Hate” via a sold-out 7” single and cassette, and now, both are available at all DSPs worldwide from Sub Pop.
Bully’s Alicia Bognanno offered this on the covers, “Normally during this time I’d be running around trying to promote the upcoming record and rehearsing to get ready to tour again but given the circumstances, I’m trying to work with what I can do at home alone. I picked a couple Sub Pop songs to cover to release something in the meantime. I played everything on these songs (for better or worse haha) and tracked them in my living room. Gotta do what ya gotta to spice it up sometimes.”
Of the “About a Girl” cover, Rolling Stone raved, “Hearing the Nashville band cover Nirvana is almost too obvious — but, good God, is it glorious. Their spin on 1989’s “About a Girl” strikes a perfect balance of raw and melodic, without ever sounding like the output of a cover band…Still, it’s not just a skilled copy of a classic. She mixes in some experimental guitar squeals on the instrumental and a truly trippy solo that keeps the sound from going thoroughly Nineties. Plus, Bognanno differentiates herself from your average karaoke crooner with her stellar delivery.
As for her take on “Turn To Hate,” Stereogum had this to say, “A song that sounds incredible in Bully’s rocket-fueled garage rock style.” Paste concurs, “Bully’s rendition is possibly even better than the original with its incredibly anthemic chorus.”
The official music video for Orville
Peck’s “Queen of the Rodeo” is premiering today. Directed by Austin Peters(Haim,
Chvrches, Bastille), the video also features a special interlude version of
Peck’s song “Roses Are Falling.”
Both songs
come from Peck’s critically acclaimed debut album Pony, out now
on Sub Pop Records. In celebration of the album, Peck will continue
his extensive U.S. tour this spring including stops at Seattle’s Showbox, San Francisco’s The Independent, Las Vegas’ Brooklyn
Bowl, San Diego’s Humphrey’s and New Orleans’ Music Box Theatre among several
others. Peck will also perform at both Coachella and Stagecoach
festivals this spring, one of the select few artists performing at both events.

Masked outlaw crooner Orville Peck made his live debut on national late night TV last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live! This performance was a part of his participation in Apple Music’s Up Next program, which highlights emerging talent in the music world. Watch Orville’s rendition of “Dead of Night” above and the web exclusive “Take You Back (The Iron Hoof Cattle Call)” below.
Apple Music today announced masked country crooner Orville Peck will kick off the new year
as the latest Up Next artist to join Apple Music’s monthly artist initiative
geared towards identifying, showcasing and elevating rising talent. Peck
embodies the program’s rising star status as a modern alt-country artist for
the Instagram age, a burgeoning fashion and cultural icon who is breaking
boundaries in the country music tradition.
Apple Music has fully supported the masked indie artist following the
release of his critically acclaimed 2019 debut album, Pony. Since then, Peck has been celebrated as a
guitar artist crossing genre bounds and showcased across Apple Music’s Pure Country
Radio, Today’s
Country, Indie Radio,
Untitled,
Up Next,
Country Wide,
Eclectic Rock,
as well as Zane Lowe and Matt Wilkinson’s Beats 1 anchor shows.
“I’m thrilled to
have been chosen as Apple’s newest Up Next artist,” said Peck. “They have been
so supportive of me and it feels real nice to be able to bring y’all a little
closer to who I am as a country musician and an artist.”
“Orville Peck is an
enigma alright: a glorious mix of differing qualities that, on paper, really
shouldn’t work,” said Apple Music host Matt Wilkinson. “Yet when you listen to
his music, and hear his story, and watch how he connects with people on stages
all over the world, there can be no denying that he’s hit upon something very
special indeed. At his London show last October I saw stetson-wearing country
old-timers stood shoulder-to-shoulder with drag queens, hipsters, indie kids,
members of the fashion elite and sweet couples out on date night - all
completely connected thanks to the music of one man who says he’s spent his
entire life feeling disconnected. The irony of that!”
Peck’s Up Next short shot on iPhone 11 comes to Apple Music
exclusively today and is available to watch HERE.
In the film, Peck speaks to his trademark fringed mask, and tells Apple Music,
“The point is combining ultra-sincerity with a heightened version of who you
are at your core.”
On January 29th, Peck will perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as part of Apple
Music’s Up Next program.
The latest music from Orville Peck, along with that of his Up Next
peers, is available now on the Apple Music Up Next Playlist.
