Beam says of ‘Milky Way”: “It was the first song we started working on together and it’s my very favorite melody of the bunch.”

Set sail on the sonic seas of brand new music from German electro-wizards, The Notwist!
We (Sub Pop, that is) are pleased to share release details on behalf of Superheroes, Ghostvillains & Stuff, their new live album which features 16 tracks from The Notwist’s extensive catalog, and was recorded on December 16, 2015 on the second of three consecutive, sold-out nights at UT Connewitz in Leipzig, Germany.
If The Notwist are a new band to you, get to know them! On this page, you can read up on their rich history - over the years, the band has been involved in very notable and sonically awesome side projects like Ms. John Soda and Lali Puna, among others. In the meantime, you can listen to the live version of The Notwist classic, “Pick Up the Phone,” via the good people of Flood Magazine [link here].
Superheroes, Ghostvillains & Stuff will be available as a digital only release in North America from Sub Pop [here] and in Europe on 2xCD/3xLP/DL through Alien Transistor [here].
The Notwist have a European tour scheduled in 2016-17, and if they happen to be playing near you, do yourself a favor and join them for the night. They’re pretty magical live. (Dates below.)

This coming Bumbershoot weekend, September 2nd-4th, Sub Pop Records is fairly well-prepared, and entirely thrilled, to host the above-mentioned Art Installation, Pop-up Store & Immersive Experience - aka Bumberstore - providing a rare glimpse of the unique art, design, culture, and (of course…) merchandise associated with the label.
You are right in identifying this as another conveniently located Sub Pop retail experience you have to buy a ticket to get into! (See also Sub Pop’s Airport Store.)
And you may (or may not) now be wondering: Exactly what sort of hocus pocus does it take to turn this…
Into this?
Like the other seven wonders of the world, we began with coffee and donuts (obvs.) Also cold pizza: breakfast of champions and losers alike!
Next, gather your brightest minds, your most idea-ful artists and designers, your typically fairly shiftless staffers. Then, sacrifice one toe. Anyone’s toe will do, however the toe of a department director is sure to stack the deck in your favor.
It takes a village. And also roughly that many pillows…
And the hearts of an entire company.
Add merch…
And we’re also hoping to sell some records.
Three days won’t be nearly enough time, but it’ll have to do. And we’re super stoked to see you there.
Find the Sub Pop Bumberstore at the International Fountain Pavilion. (there’s a map over here.)
Southern gentlemen Arbor Labor Union share the stage with notorious knuckleheads The Gotobeds for the rest of this week (July 19-23), as they shred their way through the sultry South. What could go wrong?
Shows begin tonight, July 19th at Cats Cradle in Carrboro, NC and wrap Saturday, July 23rd in Nashville, TN at Foobar.
The Gotobeds fans can also catch them in the daylight hours; they’ve got TWO live in-store performances coming up 7/23 at Grimey’s in Nashville and 7/24 at Shake It Records in Cincinnati. And in that meantime, Arbor Labor Union continue on the road supporting the one and only Dinosaur Jr.!
Mass Gothic’s brand new 5-song Sup Goth digital EP is available today, and was recorded in New York this past spring, shortly after the release of their superb Sub Pop debut, Mass Gothic.
Where the group’s self-titled debut chronicled the depths of depression, Sup Goth is the resulting catharsis. The EP is a collaboration between Noel Heroux and partner / bandmate Jessica Zambri, and marks the first Mass Gothic recording the pair have completed together [Listen to the full EP here].
